Sustainable Packaging Sourcing: Materials, Claims and a Better Brief
Updated
Turn packaging sustainability goals into specific material and documentation requirements. Compare options for protection, structure and supported claims.
A useful sustainable packaging brief specifies a measurable goal: less material, a documented recycled-content requirement, or a design intended for a particular disposal route. Describe the complete package and request evidence for any claim you plan to make. A material name or natural-looking finish is not enough to substantiate an environmental benefit.
Start with the goal and the product
Record the product dimensions, weight, protection needs, presentation requirements and how the customer will use the packaging. Then identify the environmental objective. Keep product protection and the intended packing process in the brief so proposed changes can be assessed against both.
For example, you might ask to compare a current box and insert with a revised structure using fewer separate components. This is a comparison request, not a promise of reduced environmental impact or lower delivery costs.
Specify the whole packaging structure
List the board or paper, coatings, laminations, inks, adhesive, closures and inserts. Ask suppliers to identify proposed substitutions. Compare the complete construction; one component does not describe the finished package.
For recycled-content requirements, state the component the requirement applies to and request the supporting documentation. Keep certification requests specific to the material, supplier and production route being proposed.
Check the claim before printing it
The FTC Green Guides summary cautions against broad, unqualified environmental benefit claims and explains how specific claims need support. Recyclability and recycled content are different claims; do not treat one as proof of the other.
Before adding an environmental statement to artwork, obtain an appropriate review of the wording and evidence. Describe which part of the product or package the statement covers. Sourcing Lab USA does not act as a certification body.
Compare samples and commercial terms
Review product fit, assembly, appearance and protection using the agreed sample process. For each option, record the dimensions, materials, unit price, quantity, setup charges and packing details. Ask how a proposed change affects the specification and shipment configuration rather than assuming savings.
Keep the final material specification, supporting documents and artwork approval together. If any component changes before production, review whether the original claim and approval still apply.
Prepare a packaging sourcing request
Sourcing Lab USA welcomes product sourcing projects now, with invoicing from France or China as confirmed in the quotation. A clear brief helps assess custom packaging options through its independent China sourcing partnership. Material choices, samples, documentation and commercial terms are confirmed per project.
