China Sourcing Agent Fees: Compare Scope Before Percentages
Understand fixed fees, commissions and product supply pricing. Use a quote-completeness worksheet instead of assuming a universal sourcing fee.
A sourcing agent's cost depends on the work agreed and how the provider charges for it. A proposal may use a fixed project fee, an order-based commission, a retainer or a product resale price. Compare the total quoted scope, exclusions and payment basis. A percentage alone does not tell you whether samples, inspection, transport or supplier follow-up are included.
Sourcing Lab USA quotes the purchase and supply of products. It does not publish a universal agency commission. The company contracting and invoicing from France or China is identified in the quotation. This article explains ways to compare offers; it does not introduce a new paid consulting service.
How do the pricing arrangements differ?
Ask the provider to describe its actual arrangement. The table identifies questions to resolve, not market-average prices or legal definitions of every contract.
| Quoted basis | Question to resolve | Useful comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed project fee | Which deliverables and revisions are included? | Total fee plus excluded work |
| Percentage of order value | Which amount is the percentage applied to? | Fee base, minimum fee and excluded charges |
| Retainer | Which work and period does it cover? | Monthly scope, capacity and exit terms |
| Product resale price | Which goods and order responsibilities are included? | Like-for-like product and delivered-cost basis |
A quoted fee based on goods value differs from one based on goods plus transport. Ask about minimum charges, repeat orders, samples, tooling, supplier rebates or other compensation relevant to the arrangement. Record what the provider discloses rather than assuming that a low visible fee means a lower total cost.
What does a useful cost comparison look like?
Start with one specification revision and quantity. Give each amount one of four states: quoted, estimated, excluded, or unknown. An unknown cost is not zero. A cost explicitly excluded from one quote still belongs in the comparison if your project requires it.
Illustrative arithmetic only: suppose a hypothetical agency proposal quotes $8,000 for goods and a 6% fee on goods value. The fee is $480, making the subtotal $8,480 before any other costs. Suppose a separate supply proposal quotes $8,700 for the goods and agreed coordination. You cannot conclude which is cheaper without comparing samples, setup, quality scope, transport, and the work remaining to the buyer. Neither figure is a Sourcing Lab USA price, market benchmark or customer result.
| Item to compare | Proposal A | Proposal B |
|---|---|---|
| Same product, revision and quantity | Confirm | Confirm |
| Product amount | Record currency and validity | Record currency and validity |
| Fee or product supply basis | Record calculation | Record inclusions |
| Samples and tooling | Included, separate or unknown | Included, separate or unknown |
| Testing or inspection | Named scope and provider | Named scope and provider |
| Transport and import costs | Confirm separately | Confirm separately |
| Buyer tasks still required | Name the owner | Name the owner |
What should happen before you accept a proposal?
Request a written list of deliverables, the contracting company, quote validity, payment milestones and change rules. Clarify whether a sample charge is credited to production, whether tooling is specific to your product, and what happens if the specification changes. Do not treat an informal sample discussion as acceptance of a production order.
Use the RFQ checklist to standardize the information supplied to each bidder. Then use the landed-cost worksheet to separate the product decision from shipment and import estimates.
How should you compare the time your team will spend?
List the buyer tasks that remain: preparing artwork, reviewing samples, answering supplier questions, arranging specialists and approving changes. Estimate time for your own internal planning without presenting it as a supplier charge or guaranteed saving. A partner can reduce the coordination your team needs to perform only to the extent that its agreed scope actually covers that work.
For a component-heavy packaging project, the more useful negotiation may be a clearer assembly sample and approval process rather than a lower percentage. For apparel, it may be consolidating comments on fit, fabric and labels into a single revision. Discuss these outputs before comparing fee headlines.
Does Sourcing Lab USA charge a sourcing-agent fee?
The current commercial offer is a quotation for product sourcing, purchase and supply. Pricing follows the product specification, quantity, sampling and order terms; no separate standard sourcing-agent commission is assumed. Read the supply arrangement, or send your product requirements for a project-specific discussion.
